LACUNA COIL's ANDREA FERRO: 'It's Important That You Stay Focused On Your Dreams'

December 10, 2014

On September 14, Amb Pirate of Capital Chaos TV conducted an interview with vocalist Andrea Ferro of Italian heavy rockers LACUNA COIL at the Aftershock festival in in Sacramento, California. You can now watch the chat below. A couple of excerpts follow (transcribed by BLABBERMOUTH.NET).

On some of the lyrical messages on LACUNA COIL's new album, "Broken Crown Halo":

Andrea: "There's a lot of [commentary on] how much, in this society, people are kind of isolating themselves through social media especially, how much we can communicate so much with all different kind of medias, but in the end, how much people still feel alone and just new ways of not really living life. Even if we are very, very into social media and we use it a lot because of the band, because of the fact that we're far away from home a long time, but we feel there must be a better balance between how much we are slaves to these things here and then how much we could live our real lives."

"When I was a kid, there were no mobile phones, basically. So I was going out and playing soccer for five hours in the afternoon, and nobody could reach me, but nobody was getting scared or afraid that something must have [happened]. Today, if you're missing for one hour, then everybody's scared, [wanting to know], 'What's happening?' Because of everything you read on the Internet every day, all the news focusing on the most tragic things. So we need to find a better balance — that's basically the approach we [have in] the lyrics — and we use a lot of metaphor between the real-life experience we have and the horror movies that have been inspiring our growth as kids."

On the song "Nothing Stands In Our Way" from "Broken Crown Halo":

Andrea: "The inspiration for the song came from the very negative situation we were surrounded [by] while we were writing the album, and there was all this news about how much the economies were collapsing in Europe, and not only in Europe, and then how [many] people were getting fired or losing their jobs and [committing] suicide because of that. And all this negativity around us pushed us towards focusing on our dreams. Even if your dream is very far away, and maybe you will never reach it, or maybe you will reach ten percent, or fifty percent, you need to be focused on your dreams, even in very negative times. That's why you need the strength, you need to not be stopped by anything. Even if you can have the worst thing happening to you, you still need to find that special energy to go on. And that's the message of the song. Because that's the reality. That's how we have approached our career, and in the end it pays off. We never expected, when we started in Milan, Italy, to become an international band, being able to play these kinds of events or touring the world. We never expected it, because there was no history of other Italian rock/metal bands doing this. But we believed in our dream. We got lucky, we got unlucky, we did mistakes, we've been up high, we've been low down… everything happened in our career, and we're still here, we're still doing it. So it's important that you stay focused on your dreams, even in negative times."
