LAKE OF TEARS Frontman Talks About Songwriting Process For New Album

October 11, 2005

Starry-Night.de recently conducted an interview with LAKE OF TEARS guitarist/vocalist Daniel Brennare. A couple of excerpts from the question-and-answer session follow:

On the current feeling within the band:

"The mood within the band is currently very good and the motivation is on a high level and we really feel that we must continue doing this since it's really making us grow as persons. Though we are currently burdened with the heavy weight of writing new material and this is mostly a very depressive and anguish-filled part. The feedback from both press and fans has been nothing short of fantastic … but again this can also lead to some very heavy pressure."

On the group's songwriting process:

"The mental part of writing songs is very difficult to explain. It can be so very easy when something just comes to you … but so very, very hard when nothing comes to you. But when you have those ideas in place somehow then the physical part is very easy. A song can start with a guitar riff in the rehearsing room, or a keyboard line on my computer, or a vocal phrase in my head. If I could somehow conclude how this whole process works I would say something like: Writing songs is a long mental struggle but a short physical step."

On the band's plans for the immediate future:

"Well, one very important thing for us right now is to write new material, so this will be our band focus for the rest of the year. Though as nothing is really finished yet I can't tell you what it will be like. All our conversations (and actually we have quite many of those) about plans for how we're going to sound ends with 'what will be will be.' So, the style is not important for us … it's more a matter of being honest to our inner selves. So, we'll see … At the same time we are trying to play at least some shows as well. Due to families and jobs of course we don't have all the time that is necessary to go out and play any longer tours but we are doing our best to get a taste of the touring life. I'm quite sure that next year will bring us out on the roads a bit more … and Germany will of course be one of the stops since it feels almost like a second home to us (we've played twice as many times in Berlin then in Borås, our hometown)."

LAKE OF TEARS recently inked a deal with Dockyard 1, the new company formed by Dirk Putzke, Christine Stephan (both ex-Sanctuary/Noise Records) and Piet Sielck (IRON SAVIOR). The group's seventh full-length album is expected next spring/summer.

LAKE OF TEARS' most recent album, "Black Brick Road", was released in August 2004 through Noise Records. The follow-up to 2002's "The Neonai" featured cover artwork by Kristian Wåhlin, who has painted all of the previous LAKE OF TEARS covers except "Forever Autumn" (1999).

LAKE OF TEARS are scheduled to perform at Trägårn in Borås, Sweden on December 2.
