June 13, 2007

Vocalist Elias van Quish of Lebanese death metal band OATH TO VANQUISH was interviewed on BBC Radio 4 as part of a documentary by Tim Samuels titled "Guerrillas of Pop". The show was broadcast on Saturday, June 9 between 10:30 and 11:00 GMT.

In "Guerrillas of Pop", Tim Samuels explores the many guises of the censorship of popular music in European democracies. He considers the worlds of dancehall, French rap and even Arabian death metal music, where homophobia, sexism and violence are grist to the entertainment mill. And he asks a simple question: is this music really something we need to be protected from? Can't we decide for ourselves whether it's likely to deprave and corrupt, or just a load of shouty rubbish?

An interesting profile of documentary-maker Tim Samuels including some of his work into north-south racism within the U.K., miscarriages of justice and shortcomings in hygiene at hospitals, can be found here.
