LIVING COLOUR Frontman Discusses 'Jesus Christ Superstar' Gig

Shay Quillen of MercuryNews.com recently conducted an interview with LIVING COLOUR frontman Corey Glover about Corey's current stint in the role of Judas in "Jesus Christ Superstar" at American Musical Theatre of San Jose, California. A couple of excerpts from the chat follow:

Q: How does life on the road with a theatrical troupe compare to life on the road with a rock band?

Corey: Well, with a rock band, really, you work Thursday, Friday, Saturday, Sunday. With a touring theatrical company, you work Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday, Sunday, and you do two shows on Saturday and Sunday. Cumulatively, it's a lot more work. You know, the schedule's a lot more grueling. The great thing about it is, your days are early. You go into the theater, the show starts at 7:30, and you're out before 10 o'clock. Your night's free.

Q: Why did LIVING COLOUR split in 1995?

Corey: I think everybody wanted to go out and do their own thing. We wanted to do solo projects, and everybody was like, well, I can't focus on my own solo career and deal with LIVING COLOUR at the same time. LIVING COLOUR took up a whole bunch of our time. So we had to learn to really do some time management. Our lives were changing, and we had other things to say that weren't particularly LIVING COLOUR things to say, and we wanted to make that happen. So it was like, let's just walk away for now.

Q: How are things different now?

Corey: Nothing really changed, other than the fact we learned that our side projects are our side projects, and LIVING COLOUR is our LIVING COLOUR gig.

Q: What do you think about the state of black rock today?

Corey: There's a lot of bands out there. What's different is not the state of black music, but what's different is the means by which people are getting to see it. The Internet gives you an opportunity to hear bands that you never would have heard before.

Q: Is it hard for you guys to balance everything you want to do?

Corey: It's sometimes really hard, but you know, you really want to do it. It's about doing the work, which is really much more important to us than anything else. We have a very good work ethic. Like "there's work to be done; let's get it done."
