MASTODON Guitarist Talks About Upcoming CD
January 10, 2006MASTODON guitarist Bill Kelliher recently spoke to Decibel magazine about the songwriting process for the group's follow-up to 2004's "Leviathan", tentatively titled "Blood Mountain". The CD, which is expected to surface this summer, will be the band's first for new label Warner Bros.
"We're thinking of 'Blood Mountain' as a metaphor for the mountain-climb we're about to embark on with Warner, the next year of touring and all the mythical creatures and shit we're going to meet along the way like tree people and three-headed dogs," Kelliher is quoted as saying in the magazine's February 2006 issue.
"We have about five solid songs together right now," he continued. "It's still the same formula but we have a lot more influences we're bringing into the music. We've been listening to newer KING CRIMSON and Brann [Dailor; drums] — who also writes a few riffs — has added some spacey, guitar delay parts and Brent's [Hinds; vocals, guitar] got some crazy , chickin' pickin' licks and surf rock/country/bluegrass/metal riffs going on. There are also really long, 'Hearts Alive'-type, teched out songs as well. It's kind of the next step for us, a progression of what we've been doing."
