MATT SORUM Is Open To Reforming VELVET REVOLVER With LZZY HALE On Lead Vocals: 'I'd Do It', He Says

In a new interview with Mike Hsu of the Worcester, Massachusetts radio station 100 FM The Pike, former GUNS N' ROSES and VELVET REVOLVER drummer Matt Sorum spoke about the recently released "Sound & Vision Live" concert film, which was captured live at the inaugural Palm Springs Sound & Vision Awards at the historic Plaza Theatre on March 2, 2026. The recording, which was produced by Sorum, features performances by Paul Rodgers (FREE, BAD COMPANY) and Geezer Butler (BLACK SABBATH),joined by an all-star lineup including Corey Taylor (SLIPKNOT),Lzzy Hale (HALESTORM),Glenn Hughes (DEEP PURPLE),Nuno Bettencourt (EXTREME),Charlie Starr (BLACKBERRY SMOKE),Phil X (BON JOVI),Steve Stevens (Billy Idol),Matt Sorum (GUNS N' ROSES, VELVET REVOLVER),Robert DeLeo (STONE TEMPLE PILOTS),Stevie Salas (Mick Jagger),Mike Mangan (THE CULT),and Paul Ill (Alicia Keys).

After Hsu praised Hale's vocal performance on a cover of BAD COMPANY's classic song "Shooting Star", which is featured on "Sound & Vision Live", Sorum, the co-founder of Adopt The Arts Foundation, said (as transcribed by BLABBERMOUTH.NET): "I think people are gonna be blown away. Obviously she's got her band, but this particular song, when you hear the way she sings it, it's... Even Geezer Butler came up to me and said, 'That's the best singer I've heard since Tina Turner.' And I was, like, 'I think you're right.' I mean, she's got it, man. She's just amazing. I knew I needed... I wanted some female energy up there. I didn't want it to be a bunch of dudes. So I invited her, and she just killed it. So I'm really excited about people hearing that one, too. That's on YouTube as well, if you wanna go watch it."

Matt also talked about a possible reformation of VELVET REVOLVER, the band Sorum formed in 2002 with fellow GUNS N' ROSES members Duff McKagan and Slash. Sorum, McKagan, Slash and guitarist Dave Kushner held an exhaustive singer search after VELVET REVOLVER's formation that lasted for almost two years, during which they issued an open invitation to the public to send in demos. Eventually they settled on former STONE TEMPLE PILOTS singer Scott Weiland. VELVET REVOLVER released two full-length albums through RCA/Sony BMG — 2004's "Contraband" and 2007's "Libertad" — before dismissing Weiland in April 2008.

After Hsu suggested a VELVET REVOLVER comeback with Lzzy on lead vocals, Sorum said: "Whew. Yeah, I mean, come on. I'd do it. [Laughs] I don't know what those other two guys [Slash and Duff] are up to, but give 'em a call. [Laughs]"

Weiland was found dead on his band's tour bus in December 2015. The vocalist, who was 48 years old at the time of his death, was on tour with THE WILDABOUTS in Minnesota when he was found unresponsive.

VELVET REVOLVER reunited with Weiland for a four-song set in January 2012 at a Los Angeles tribute concert for late songwriter John O'Brien, but the band has otherwise remained inactive.

At one point it was reported that VELVET REVOLVER was going to team with STONE SOUR and SLIPKNOT vocalist Corey Taylor, but the idea was ultimately vetoed by Slash. The group and Taylor recorded demos of 10 songs together.

Rodgers and Butler are honored on "Sound & Vision Live", a limited-edition all-star double vinyl album. The LP captures extraordinary performances honoring Rodgers and Butler while bringing together an all-star cast of musicians in support of music education.

Every participating artist donated their time and talent in support of Adopt The Arts and its mission to restore and sustain music education in underserved public elementary schools.

The album was recorded by Kemble Walters and Miguel Sosa, mixed by Walters at Goodnoise Studios in Palm Springs, and mastered for vinyl by Grammy-winning mastering engineer Howie Weinberg and Will Borza. Internationally acclaimed photographer and creative director Glen Wexler created the album artwork and liner notes. The deluxe package features archival photography, original artwork and extensive liner notes celebrating the performances and the enduring legacies of Paul Rodgers and Geezer Butler.

Founded in 2012 by Sorum and Emmy Award-winning actress Jane Lynch, Adopt The Arts restores and sustains music education in underserved public elementary schools.
