The Taj Mahal is widely recognized as "the jewel of Muslim art in India and one of the universally admired masterpieces of the world's heritage."
METALLICA's first show ever in India, scheduled to take place Friday night (October 28) in Delhi, was canceled due to security and safety concerns. Local media reports said that a surge of people caused the barricades at the venue to collapse early in the evening, with some fans gaining access to the stage area and damaging equipment in the process. Although the concert was at first postponed to the following evening, it was later scrapped outright after the promoter was unable to secure a permit for a Saturday (October 29) event.
METALLICA issued a statement saying, "We arrived in Delhi on Friday very excited and ready to play our first show ever in India at the F1 Rocks concert. However, immediately at the end of our afternoon press conference at a hotel near the venue, we were notified that there was a serious question as to whether the show could proceed with regard to the safety of the concert audience. And our first and foremost concern is always for the safety of you, the fans."
The band added, "We are deeply disappointed with this news as we were looking forward to our first experience in India as much as you guys were."
Some 25,000 fans bought tickets to the show and crowds began lining up at the venue at approximately 3:00 p.m. local time. Several announcements were reportedly made throughout the afternoon requesting people to move back because the barrier in front of the stage was giving way. The crowd got increasingly more restive with every such announcement, objecting and booing.
METALLICA performed Sunday in Bangalore, India, at the Palace Grounds before an estimated 50,000 fans. James Hetfield told the crowd, "India has been a life-changing experience for us."
