METALLICA's 'Death Magnetic' Lands On Australian Chart On One-Day Sales

September 14, 2008

According to Undercover News, the new METALLICA album, "Death Magnetic", debuted at No. 6 in Australia with just one day on sale.

"Death Magnetic" broke tradition with the usual Australian release day of Saturday when it was released everywhere in the world on Friday, September 12.

As the ARIA (Australian Recording Industry Association) chart is based on sales from Saturday to Friday, the METALLICA album earned the number 6 position from sales for September 12 alone.

"Death Magnetic" sold 4,849 units nationally. There were no digital sales.

"Death Magnetic" also entered the Irish national chart at position No. 3 and the UK chart at No. 1.

Even though "Death Magnetic" was officially released worldwide this past Friday, September 12, several UK and Irish retailers reportedly started selling the CD early — on Wednesday, September 10 — after the record was leaked online the week before.

"Death Magnetic" was produced by the band and Rick Rubin, known for his work with the RED HOT CHILI PEPPERS, SYSTEM OF A DOWN, JOHNNY CASH and many others.

The album marks the recording debut of bassist Robert Trujillo, who joined METALLICA in 2003 shortly after "St. Anger" was completed.

METALLICA will kick off its indoor North American tour on October 21 in Glendale, Arizona, with shows booked through the end of January.
