METALLICA's JAMES HETFIELD Says Touring Is Hard Business

August 19, 2004

Launch Radio Networks is reporting that METALLICA kicked off the third — and most likely final — leg of their 2004 North American tour on Monday (August 16) in St. Paul, Minnesota, and frontman James Hetfield says that on a personal level, he is enjoying performing now more than ever. But Hetfield also said that the business side of touring has gotten harder. "For some reason, touring is really difficult, and that was the answer to, you know, 'everyone just download, you'll make your money on tour!' And now, well, guess what, you don't. Groups are gonna, they have to join together as packages to go out, and it's a struggle, and I'm really grateful that I'm not a band starting out right now. It'd be very difficult."

Tuesday (August 17) marked the publication of the first official METALLICA book, titled "So What! The Good, The Mad, And The Ugly". The oversized hardcover includes more than 1,000 photographs, band members' handwritten entries, drawings, and reflections, and candid interviews with the group.

Much of the material was compiled from "So What!", the official METALLICA fan club magazine, which is mailed on a quarterly basis to 20,000 members of the band's fan club.
