MTLEY CRE's NIKKI SIXX Honored By COVENANT HOUSE; Video Highlights Available
May 23, 2008MTLEY CRE bassist Nikki Sixx was one of the honorees at the ninth annual Covenant House California Awards Gala on May 9 at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Los Angeles. Nikki presented the Covenant House with a $250,000 check which goes to homeless youth and was raised raised through the sales of his book, "The Heroin Diaries", as well as through donations.
To see highlights of the night in which Nikki was introduced by his current girlfriend, tattoo artist Kat Von D (the star of the TLC reality series "L.A. Ink"),check out the video below.
A portion of the proceeds from Sixx's 2007 memoir, "The Heroin Diaries", benefits his charity Running Wild In The Night, which provides a creative arts program for Covenant House California at their youth shelters in Los Angeles and Oakland. Sixx said in a statement, "My partnership with Covenant House is so important to me because I've been that kid on the streets. When I became aware that so many kids come through Covenant House but don't stay long enough to get the care and treatment many of them need, I created the Running Wild In The Night program as a way to engage their creativity and encourage them to stick around a while to get themselves on a better path for good."
Sixx told The Pulse of Radio that the lifestyle he led during the depths of his heroin addiction in the late '80s pales in comparison to the productive life he is living now. "Back then I could write an album, could somehow record a record, and then could go on tour, which is basically all one thing," he said. "Now, president of a record company, have my own clothing line, father of four you know, single father, it's a lot different than being a married father two bands, an author, there's just so much going on, it's insane."
Covenant House California has taken in more than 150,000 homeless youth since 1988. The non-profit organization says its mission is to "protect and safeguard all children of the street" through comprehensive services of street outreach, residential programs and supportive services.
Sixx was honored alongside Borba Skin Products founder and CEO Scott-Vincent Borba. The event also included live and silent auctions and was hosted by current "Dancing with the Stars" contestant Cristian de la Fuente.
Previous honorees include Charlize Theron, Ray Charles, William Shatner, Andy Garcia, Sharon Osbourne and many more.
