Musical Featuring SERJ TANKIAN Songs Now In Workshop
December 5, 2008The Pulse of Radio reports that "Prometheus Bound", a new rock-based musical featuring songs composed by SYSTEM OF A DOWN frontman Serj Tankian, is currently being workshopped at the American Repertory Theatre in Cambridge, Massachusetts. The show's book and lyrics were written by Steven Sater, the award-winning creator of the Broadway hit "Spring Awakening". Tankian told The Pulse of Radio what it was like to work on his first musical. "The play for me is a whole different ballgame," he said. "It's, I mean, I've worked with Daron (Malakian, SYSTEM OF A DOWN guitarist),who's written some lyrics, but mostly I've wrote my own lyrics. So working with a playwright who's giving you everything that should be done and you could just provide the music as a composer is really interesting. It's exciting. It's a whole new thing for me, you know. I've never done this before, so I'm in."
According to RollingStone.com, a full production of the show is planned for the 2009/2010 season.
Singer/songwriter Duncan Sheik, who scored "Spring Awakening", has also contributed songs to the new show.
"Prometheus Bound" is based on the the Greek myth about a mortal who stole fire from the gods. Sater told RollingStone.com, "I stayed very faithful to the ancient Greek text ...we just opened it up with music. The chorus, what they sing is so ethereal and beautiful and melodic, and it's set against wailing rock anthems that come from Prometheus and Oceanus and the other characters."
Tankian also recently worked with ex-FAITH NO MORE vocalist Mike Patton on a song called "Bird's Eye" for the movie "Body of Lies". Tankian spent much of the last year touring behind his 2007 solo debut, "Elect the Dead".
