NAVARRO On 'Rock Star' Tryouts: 'Nobody Got The Memo On Who They Were Auditioning For'
April 4, 2006Former JANE'S ADDICTION/RED HOT CHILI PEPPERS guitarist Dave Navarro, who will return as one of the hosts of CBS's "Rock Star" program, has issued an update on the auditioning process for the program, which will be used by the all-star band SUPERNOVA as the competition to determine their new lead singer.
SUPERNOVA will feature drummer MÖTLEY CRÜE drummer Tommy Lee, former METALLICA bassist and current VOIVOD member Jason Newsted, and onetime GUNS N' ROSES axeman Gilby Clarke. The second edition of CBS's "Rock Star" will premiere on the network this summer.
Commented Navarro: "[On Saturday, April 1] I went down to the Knitting Factory in Hollywood with Jason and Gilby for the L.A. 'Rock Star' auditions. No doubt, there was some great talent there, but I was amazed by some of the choices that were made by great number of the hopeful singers. Celine Dion songs, trumpet and ukulele solos, original acoustic numbers. It was like nobody got the memo regarding who they were auditioning for! SUPERNOVA is made up of members of GUNS, MÖTLEY and METALLICA! Very few people chose to just rock and bring it. Hey, they did their Dion covers well, I suppose, but man, these guys needed to see attitude and power and some rock! My advice for anyone going to future auditions is to save your original songs until the call back and just do great rock covers for the initial audition. These guys need to know the music you are doing so they have an idea of what you sound like. When you come in and do an a capella original, nobody has any idea if you are even close to in key or in time."
"Rock Star" has signed songwriter-performer Butch Walker to produce SUPERNOVA's first album, to be released just before the new band hits the road in 2007. Walker, named Rolling Stone's 2005 "hot" producer, has written or produced tracks for AVRIL LAVIGNE, PINK and BOWLING FOR SOUP.
