NEVERMORE Singer Discusses Solo Album

Jeffrey Easton of Metal Exiles recently conducted an interview with NEVERMORE frontman Warrel Dane. A couple of excerpts from the chat follow.

Metal Exiles: Why a solo album now?

Warrel Dane: Because I can. (laughter) The reason that this came about is that when we were touring for "The Godless Endeavor", I was bored. I wanted to music to work on while everybody was out partying.

Metal Exiles: Is touring not an excuse to go out and have fun?

Warrel: At some point it turns into work but touring can be about having a good time and playing live. I just needed something to do to eat up my former drinking time.

Metal Exiles: Are you sober now?

Warrel: I am attempting to stay sober 24/7 and sometimes it can be rough considering in my past I have depleted the worlds supply of vodka. I drank so much vodka I can still taste it years later. I started talking to Peter (Wichers, ex-SOILWORK guitarist) about doing a project and we started exchanging files which took awhile, two-and-a-half years for the whole project.

Metal Exiles: Let's start with the cover art. Where did that come from?

Warrel: That is art from Travis Smith, he is an amazing artist. He knows how to translate my ideas because we worked together on a few NEVERMORE albums. I always just give him a general idea and he just runs with it and he is always is on the money. It is rare that you can find an artist that can take an idea and turn it into a beautiful piece of artwork. When I first saw the artwork I must say I was frightened, it is kind of creepy.

Metal Exiles: As far as the band is concerned, did your longtime friendship with Matt Wicklund (ex-HIMSA guitarist) lead you to working with him?

Warrel: Oh, definitely. I have known Matt for a long time and even worked with him at a dive bar named Goofy's in Seattle and with Jeff (Loomis) as well. I knew from the beginning that Peter Wichers would not be able to tour for this so I knew that I would have to find someone that would be able to tour so I talked to Matt. I was talking to Matt and he played me some of the material he was working on and I was amazed. He even contributed some of the material to the record.

Metal Exiles: How did you did you go about getting the other members for the solo band?

Warrel: I originally wanted the drummer from SANCTUARY to play on the record and Peter at some point suggest that we have Dirk Verbeuren (SOILWORK) do it because he knew he would nail the material. He would do it quickly and that it was what we needed in this situation and he played excellently.

Warrel Dane's solo debut, "Praises to the War Machine", sold 1,100 copies in the United States in its first week of release, according to Nielsen SoundScan.
