OPETH Frontman Apologizes For Helsinki Cancellation

December 15, 2008

Swedish progressive metallers OPETH were forced to cancel tonight's (Monday, December 15) concert in Helsinki, Finland due to guitarist/vocalist Mikael Åkerfeldt contracting laryngitis. According to a posting on the band's web site, "The show will be rescheduled as soon as he's back on his feet. As for now, we're hoping we can go ahead with the Stockholm shows [December 17-18 at Debaser Medis] as scheduled."

Commented Mikael: "Well, it fucking sucks, I got laryngitis and my voice is fucked up! We're ready for the show, went with the ferry and that night was just horrible. Had a fever and thought I was gonna cough my lungs out. The next day after virtually no sleep my voice was like three voices in one, it sounded like something off 'The Excorcist', and I mean that in a bad way.

"Writing this, I feel so bad we had to cancel because I fucking LOVE Helsinki and playing in Finland overall. I'm so sorry!! Please let us make it up to you. We'll schedule another day for a show there as soon as possible. Don't know how it works with the tix and everything but I guess calling the venue is the best idea.

"I had a doctor come see me and he checked my throat and checked my lungs and gave me steroids and some antibiotics. I've had that stuff before and it's helped pretty quick. I'm positive I'll make the Stockholm shows, at least I'm crossing my fingers.

"Can't say I feel all that great now, but some rest will hopefully have me struttin' across that stage in no time.

"Again, I'm fucking sorry and I love ya dear Finns!!!"

OPETH's latest video for "Burden" received its online premiere on November 4. While Danish director Lasse Hoile (DREAM THEATER, PORCUPINE TREE, STEVEN WILSON) shot and directed the storyline in Denmark, OPETH filmed the band performance at the Vogue theater in Vancouver, Canada.

"The Roundhouse Tapes", the long-awaited new DVD from OPETH, was released in Europe on Peaceville Records on October 27 (UK - November 10, USA - November 11).

"The Roundhouse Tapes" contains a critically acclaimed OPETH performance recorded at The Roundhouse, London in 2006. Described by Rock Sound as "a show of spectacular greatness in this legendary venue … an amazing performance by one of Europe's premier epic metal bands," the DVD perfectly captures the band in scintillating form playing a selection of classics from throughout their career.
