OZZFEST 2004: Kansas Police Arrest 16 For Underage Drinking
August 20, 2004Undercover police officers in Bonner Springs, KS charged 16 persons during Ozzfest on August 10 with either furnishing a commercial malt beverage to a minor or being a minor in possession, according to The Kansas City Star.
"That's Verizon Amphitheater," said Bonner Springs Police Lt. Rick Schubert, who supervises the detail looking for underage drinkers at the concert venue.
While the number of arrests at Ozzfest 2004 may appear like a busy night for the officers, Schubert said those figures can be expected.
"It really depends on the crowd and its size," Schubert told The Kansas City Star. "Different artists bring in different crowds. Some bring in the older crowds while others bring in the younger ones."
The department staffs the concerts with four to 10 officers in street clothes to patrol the venue looking for persons drinking. Officers ask those who appear to be underage for identification.
Persons who are underage or do not have any ID are escorted to an on-site police station where police verify their age.
Violators of the state's drinking laws are issued a summons to appear in municipal court and released on a signature bond. However, those younger than 18 are turned over to the Wyandotte County Juvenile Intake and Assessment Center.
Persons found guilty face a $250 bond and court costs of $39.50.
