PAUL DI'ANNO Live In New York City: Video Available
December 23, 2010Fan-filmed video footage of former IRON MAIDEN singer Paul Di'Anno's December 21, 2010 performance at the B.B. King Blues Club & Grill in New York City can be viewed below.
In a recent interview with PikiRocks, Di'Anno was asked what the biggest changes in the music industry (for better and worse) have been since the release of MAIDEN's debut album in 1980. "Worse — no record companies left (at least no record companies who are prepared to release, promote and support new rock and metal acts) and no CD sales of note," he replied. "Instant stardom? Television talent shows, freedom to download without payment to artists… Most of the bigger rock and metal acts have now just become travelling banks. The music business (for new rock and metal bands) has become a ghost town apart from live performances. Better — cannot think of anything that is better."
When asked what surprised him the most about the U.S. crowds during his recent tour of the country after being banned from playing here for 18 years, Di'Anno said, "The crowds seem as eager and excited to see me as they were all those years ago when I used to visit the U.S. regularly, and I seriously think that U.S. rock/metal crowds are the best there is. Also, nowadays you gotta play live to survive, so where else better than the land of rock 'n' roll — the USA? Plus, I have a lot of lost time to make up for."
Regarding what advice he would give to younger up-and-coming musicians in terms of developing a long-lasting career as opposed to being a flash in the pan, Di'Anno said, "If you are really sure this is what you want to do, then be prepared to dedicate your life solely to this and this alone. Never give up on yourself, and never get sidetracked. Be prepared to realize that it could take from one year (if you are extremely lucky) to 20 years or more to get to somewhere that you can call successful and rewarding."
