PHILIP ANSELMO On His Versatile Vocal Talents: 'I Can Do It All, Pretty Much'

November 10, 2015

Metal Wani editor in chief Owais "Vitek" Nabi recently conducted an interview with former PANTERA and current DOWN and SUPERJOINT singer Philip Anselmo. You can now listen to the chat in two parts below. A couple of excerpts follow (transcribed by BLABBERMOUTH.NET).

On how he keeps his vocal approach different for each project that he is involved with:

"Because I can do… I can do… I can do it all, pretty much. I mean, aside from certain genres, of course, that deman falsetto or high vocals or something that I'm not able to do, or willing to do. I can sing when I want to sing, and I can scream when I want to scream. I can do these things. So it's a blessing. It's something that I do, just out of the love of the project. You know, screaming over DOWN wouldn't make any sense, really, at all, especially when you're coming from the roots of, say, BLACK SABBATH. When I think DOWN, that's what I think about — is BLACK SABBATH. With SUPERJOINT, I think more, I guess, like middle-'80s hardcore, or something like that."

On living up to fans' expectations with SUPERJOINT's new music:

"Well, all you can do is be as true to the project as the former records are. You have to get back in the room with the guys that you… my main guys that always, always, always— as far as writing goes for SUPERJOINT — would be me and Jimmy Bower, and then, of course, Kevin Bond. And now we've got all the members in place that we want. I will say that it did take us a little while, and a few practices, to really get back into that feel again and understand the true feeling of SUPERJOINT. And the best thing about that is that I think that right now, the stuff that we have written is very close — it's very, very close, musically. I think we've got some stuff that is very true to the SUPERJOINT sound and the SUPERJOINT feel. So I'm very happy with that. And I'm in the band. So if I'm happy, and the rest of the guys are happy, and everybody's feeling it, then it must be true."

On his health issues:

"Well, on the [recent] DANZIG tour, I definitely, as usual, fucking injured myself again. But, now that the tour is over… I had fucked up my right knee, and both of my knees now are fucked up. But just a few days off have helped a whole lot. So I go to the doctor tomorrow to find out what the fuck I did wrong this time. So we'll see. But it does feel a lot better, and thanks for asking. I appreciate it."
