Playing Soccer In The Name Of Metal

May 14, 2009

Swedish metal photographer Daniel Falk has posted more than 300 high-quality pictures from the first annual metal soccer tournament, "Metallsvenskan", which was held on Saturday, May 9 in Örebro, Sweden. Members of IN FLAMES, SABATON, BULLET, MILLENCOLIN, THE HAUNTED, ILLDISPOSED and DARK TRANQUILLITY, along with the staff of the Swedish metal magazine Close-Up, took part in the event, which was compèred by Marika Eriksson (Swedish TV4) and film/metal guru Orvar Säfström (ex-ENTOMBED session singer and former member of NIRVANA 2002) at the brand new Behrn Arena.

The trophy was won by Örebro United, featuring members of MILLENCOLLIN, PATH OF NO RETURN, WITCHCRAFT and 2 TON PREDATOR, who beat FC Glenn (consisting of musicians from IN FLAMES, TIAMAT, HARDCORE SUPERSTAR and EVERGREY) in the final with a score of 6-2.

The day ended with a concert at the Conventum arena in Örebro where WOLF, SABATON and HAMMERFALL played.

Commented DARK TRANQUILLITY vocalist Mikael Stanne: "Somehow we got lured into a soccer tournament this past weekend. For me this was the first time on a soccer field since my athletic peak in 1982 but because we put together a great team we managed to get to the semi-finals, ending up with the bronze medal.

"Jonas [Björler; THE HAUNTED], Anders [Björler; THE HAUNTED], Martin [Henriksson; DARK TRANQUILLITY], Daniel [Antonsson; DARK TRANQUILLITY], Anders [Jivarp; DARK TRANQUILLITY] and Per [Möller Jensen; THE HAUNTED] really delivered every step of the way and we had an awesome time exhausting ourselves in front of the cheerful 3000+ audience.

"We are already in training for next year's showdown. Cheers and thanks to all who supported us."
