PRIMAL FEAR Bassist: 'It's Better To Kiss My Own Ass Than Someone Else's'

October 13, 2005

Blasting-Zone.com recently conducted an in-depth interview with PRIMAL FEAR/SINNER bassist Mat Sinner. Several excerpts follow:

Blasting-Zone.com: What inspired the title [of the new PRIMAL FEAR album] "Seven Seals"?

Mat: "It's a Bible thing. The revelation of Johannes is a very nice book to read and to make your own story out of it. With this kind of music, my intention was that it wasn't right to write songs about whiskey, highway driving or hot chicks (laughs). We were looking for a story that was interesting and a little on the mystical side. So we're making our own story about the revelation of Johannes. We are indeed not a Christian band, I have to say. It's not about believing in it or telling people to believe in the Bible. It's totally different. It's about having a different view of things and making it a little bit more interesting, lyric-wise."

Blasting-Zone.com: What was the main motivation behind waiting so long to work with an outside producer?

Mat: "We don't think it's so necessary. When we worked with Charlie [Bauerfeind], he was accepted in the studio as the co-producer of the album. The final word on everything was still by me. In the end, he was a great addition to our team. It was only done to bring someone new in and breathe some fresh air into PRIMAL FEAR. There would have been no difference if he produced the album without the guys in the band. I've had some bad experiences with producers in the past where they took over the whole project. If you're not so happy with the producer, you're stuck with the album in your hands forever. It's better to kiss my ass than anyone else's ass who is not there anymore."

Blasting-Zone.com: In your opinion, what are the main musical differenced between PRIMAL FEAR and SINNER?

Mat: "PRIMAL FEAR is about selling and touring all over the world and of course I can't do that with SINNER. Timing wise, it's just not possible. There came a time when I had to decide what I am going to do and I decided for myself that I am going to do PRIMAL FEAR. So, from time to time, if I have a little bit of space open in my schedule to record songs with some different people, it's really good and it's still existing, but it's not really a priority anymore. PRIMAL FEAR is the band that we're all enjoying and it's really, really nice to be a part of this band, producing, playing bass and singing vocals. Overall, I am enjoying this and in the future, if there is some time to do some songs with SINNER, I will do it."

Blasting-Zone.com: If you could tour the U.S. right now, what, in your opinion, would be the ideal situation?

Mat: "I would love to do a package tour, which is such a rare thing for fans over there. I know there are concerts in every big city everyday, everywhere. I would love to do a tour with three German bands, maybe even with HELLOWEEN. That would be nice."
