Prosecutors In GREAT WHITE Nightclub Fire Case To Present Victim's Audio Recording

March 5, 2005

The Associated Press is reporting that prosecutors in the Station nightclub fire case intend to use a digital audio recording made by one of the victims of the blaze.

According to court papers, prosecutors plan to present audio captured by 33-year-old Matthew Pickett of Bellingham, Massachusetts. The Providence Journal reports Pickett apparently he brought the recorder to the club to tape the show. It was found with his body.

Pickett and 99 others were killed by the blaze, which began when a band's pyrotechnics ignited flammable foam placed on the West Warwick club's walls as soundproofing.

Prosecutors did not reveal the audio recording's contents, saying they believe that would bar a court directive not to discuss the case publicly.

Club owners Michael and Jeffrey Derderian, and the former tour manager of the band GREAT WHITE each face 200 counts of involuntary manslaughter for the fire.
