PROTEST THE HERO Guitarist Interviewed In New York City; Audio Available

May 13, 2009

SmartAssRadio.com conducted an interview with guitarist Tim Millar of Whitby, Ontario, Canada's PROTEST THE HERO on Saturday, May 9, 2009 in New York City. The chat is available for streaming and/or download as an MP3 audio file at this location. An excerpt from the chat follows below.

SmartAssRadio.com: What are the crowds like at your shows?

Tim Millar: I know the people that like our music kinda come from… take something from it from all different genres so there's not like a typical "PROTEST THE HERO fan." For the most part, our music doesn't cater to dancing or throwing down because it's all over the place. So, there really hasn't been any of that, which I like because I don't really like seeing people getting punched out and stuff but there's been like crowd surfing and people pushing each other around. For the most part, people are pretty tame — by the time we get on they're pretty worn out anyway so they just stand around and just look at us with weird looks.

SmartAssRadio.com: What do you guys have on tap? Are you working on songs on tour?

Tim Millar: No, we did a little bit of writing this year, but for the most part we've been touring so much. It's like you get home and you don't wanna see each other for a couple weeks. By the time we get back to practicing, we're just like trying out a new set and everything's tight to go on the road. But actually we're taking the summer off and we're gonna start writing again. So, hopefully, I don't know how it's gonna turn out but I think with each writing session we kind of have more, you know insight about what didn't work and what worked and just kinda like take a different approach but try to focus on, you know, tightening the songs, making things full. That's a big difference I've found between "Kezia" and "Fortress". We knew what we fucked up and what was complicated and we tried to over-simplify things a little more, like look at the bigger picture and not just write the songs part to part to part.

PROTEST THE HERO will release its new live CD/DVD on July 14 via Underground Operations/Universal Music Canada and Vagrant Records in the U.S. The disc is expected to include footage of the band's December 18, 2008 concert at the Sound Academy in Toronto.

PROTEST THE HERO last year filmed a video for the song "Palms Read" in Toronto with director Sean Turrell (BILLY TALENT, TEGAN AND SARA).

PROTEST THE HERO is continuing to promote its sophomore Vagrant release, "Fortress".

The members of PROTEST THE HERO were interviewed by Altitude on the "black carpet" of last month's (April 7) Epiphone Revolver Golden Gods Awards at Club Nokia in downtown Los Angeles. Watch the chat below.
