Report: 40 People Involved In Deadly Fight At DONNYBROOK Concert

December 8, 2005

Heidi Rowley of the Tucson Citizen has issued the following report:

A Mesa man was shot to death and several people were injured last night in a fight at Skrappy's, a downtown Tucson club popular with teenagers.

The violence broke out just after 9 p.m. during a concert by hard-core metal bands [DONNYBROOK, SHATTERED REALM, HOODS and BLACK MY HEART] and at the club at 201 E. Broadway.

Skrappy's bills itself as an alcohol- and drug-free club for people under 21. Police said they have had few calls for problems there.

"We have not had a lot of calls for service there," police spokesman Sgt. Ramon Batista said. "They've never had anything of this magnitude there. We have had calls for service there, but nothing that serious."

Homicide detective Sgt. Mark Fuller said, "I'm not aware of many calls for violence at the club."

Police said the 27-year-old man was pronounced dead at a Tucson hospital. They declined to release his name.

No arrests have been made, but Batista said among the witnesses interviewed were several people police considered suspects.

Fuller said a fight started inside and spilled out to the parking lot, where the shooting occurred. He declined to provide more details.

Witnesses said it appeared as many as 40 people were involved in the fight.

Many types of bands play at the club, including hip-hop, punk and metal.

No one representing Skrappy's was available for comment last night or early today, and it was unknown if the club will be open for business today or tonight.

Skrappy's doors were locked this morning, and no one appeared to be inside.

The telephone included a taped message telling of last night's concert, saying tickets were $8. It also told of tomorrow night's concert but gave no indication if the club will be open tomorrow night.

The club's Web site, www.skrappys.org, is out of date, not showing concerts or information past the end of November.

DONNYBROOK's "Street Brutality Tour" with SHATTERED REALM, HOODS and BLACK MY HEART is scheduled to conclude Thursday (Dec. 8) with an appearance at The Club House in Las Vegas, Nevada.
