October 23, 2006

Ben Miller of the Milwaukee Business Journal reports:

An Oct. 26 auction of 15,000 Jimi Hendrix assets in New York City hasn't caused much excitement among experts in the city of the rock legend's birth.

Ocean Tomo Auctions LLC will conduct the auction at its 2006 Intellectual Property Auction this week, which auction officials say is "considered by industry experts to be the most comprehensive Jimi Hendrix collection in existence."

But in Seattle, some experts disagree.

Jacob McMurray, senior curator at the Experience Music Project museum, said, "you see Hendrix stuff up for auction all the time.

He said that the EMP has 200 "iconic" artifacts from Hendrix on display in its permanent collection and another 8,000 artifacts in its collection not on display. McMurray added that the museum does not engage in "collecting for collecting's sake" and added that it has "tended not to buy" Hendrix artifacts put up for auction at similar auctions.
