Report: Chattanooga Heavy Metal Musicians Defend Controversial Genre
September 17, 2008Laura Galbraith of the Chattanooga Times Free Press reports: It is a music genre that has been dismissed by some as "devil music," but for a number of young adults in the Chattanooga [Tennessee] area, heavy metal is both a creative outlet and a source of personal strength.
"Metal music is very much a reflection of how society really is," said Matt Glenn, 23, a sophomore majoring in psychology at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga.
"There's a lot of lyrics about discipline and strength and determination," he said. "It just kind of empowers me and gets me ready for whatever life will lay out in front of me."
Mr. Glenn, who has played drums since age 12, has performed in two Chattanooga heavy-metal bands, THE MIRROR NEVER LIES and KRIEG KIDS. Although these bands have since folded, Mr. Glenn said the metal scene in Chattanooga is still alive. Local musicians say there are 10 to 15 heavy-metal bands active in the area.
