Report: Fort Myers Police Prepares For MARILYN MANSON Visit
March 29, 2007Charles Runnells of South Florida's The News-Press reports: Fort Myers police and Space 39 gallery are taking extra precautions for shock-rocker Marilyn Manson's appearance at a private art reception Saturday [March 31].
The event isn't open to the public but could attract hundreds of rock fans and protesters, gallery owner Terry Tincher said.
Police spokeswoman Maureen Buice said no one has contacted the department with protest plans, but police will take extra steps just to be safe.
They will block off two downtown streets Saturday night instead of just one. Off-duty officers will provide security for the event.
Police will barricade First Street between Dean and Hendry streets from 7 to 10:30 p.m., Buice said.
They also will barricade Main Street between Broadway and Hendry Street from 6:30 p.m. to 2:30 a.m. because Manson has booked nearby Envie nightclub for a private party.
Manson often draws protesters at his events. He's appeared on album covers in a crucifix pose, worn androgynous outfits and called himself the "Antichrist Superstar." In the late '90s, protests were the norm at Manson's shows.
"This is just something we have to plan for," Buice said. "It's always a possibility.
"We have to be prepared."
