Report: KISS' Atlanta Concert Was Less Than 25 Percent Full
October 11, 2004Hits Daily Double reports: "How bad was this summer’s touring season? At an Aug. 4 at an Atlanta amphitheatre that seats 18,389, veteran rockers KISS — used to doing big business — sold only 4,345 tickets, according to a Wall Street Journal analysis of what observers are calling 'one of the slowest summers ever.' Despite the success of several country tours and the Vans Warped Tour, disappointing turnouts for acts like FLEETWOOD MAC, SIMON & GARFUNKEL, NORAH JONES, GLORIA ESTEFAN and KISS, not to mention the cancellation of Lollapalooza, have promoters blaming artists and their reps for greedily driving up ticket prices — especially for bad seats at shows by middling acts. Artist agents, however, counter that they can't be blamed for selling to the highest bidder, though William Morris agent Marc Geiger concedes it's 'greed' that drives up artist asking prices. Something's got to give, but 'The change has to be executed by the people who write the checks, and that's the promoters,' says House of Blues VP Alex Hodges. As KISS manager Doc McGhee put it, 'They did good business. Maybe not good enough for what people paid them.' "
