ROCK STAR SUPERNOVA Guitarist: LUKAS ROSSI 'Made Us Sound Like A Band'

February 6, 2007

Christina Fuoco of The Flint Journal recently conducted an interview with former GUNS N' ROSES and current ROCK STAR SUPERNOVA guitarist Gilby Clarke. A few excerpts from the chat follow:

On selecting Canadian Lukas Rossi to front ROCK STAR SUPERNOVA over South African-born Dilana Robichaux:

"They were both showing something special. At the end of the show, we got to hear them sing on a couple of our tunes. As soon as I heard Lukas ... (I said) 'That's it,' He made us sound like a band. He put the vocals on there, where Dilana sounded like a singer in front of a band. (Rossi) made it come together as a band. He was the right person."

On ROCK STAR SUPERNOVA's self-titled debut:

"While we were on the show, we were doing the record. Before the show started, we got together at my house and sort of worked on some ideas and got a vibe for where we wanted to go. We did the show two days a week and were in the studio the rest of the time.

"As soon as we picked Lukas, we went in and cut one of his tunes, too. His song is 'Headspin', (which) he did on the show a couple times. ... He had a big job ahead of him walking into this. He had to be a part of it. But he killed it.

"I couldn't be happier. ... I really think it's great. It's all guitars and they're loud."

On losing bassist Jason Newsted (ex-METALLICA) after he injured his shoulder trying to catch a 90-pound bass head that had fallen from atop his amp:

"We're so bummed. Jason put just as much hard work into this record as any of us. Now that he hurt himself, there's nothing we can do. We can't postpone the tour."

On how the idea for ROCK STAR SUPERNOVA came together:

"Mark ['Survivor' creator Mark Burnett] was telling Tommy [Lee], 'I've got this show. We're trying to come up with a good idea.' Tommy being Tommy said, 'Why don't I put a new band together? Why don't I use the show to find a new singer?' I got call from Tommy saying this is what he wanted to do and would I be interested."
