SAXON's PAUL QUINN: 'It Feels Great To Be Relevant Still'

Currently celebrating the 40th anniversary of its debut self-titled studio album, SAXON continues to be one of metal's most reliable bands, with 22 albums now to its credit as well as countless tours and festival appearances. While the band's age and wear-and-tear from the road would suggest SAXON should be slowing down, guitarist Paul Quinn feels as though the opposite is true as he reflected on over four decades of being in the group in an interview with HeadBangers LifeStyle at this year's Alcatraz Metal Festival in Kortrijk, Belgium.

"Lots of road miles and air miles," he said (see video below). "It feels great to be relevant still. We always have a blast and I think the audience know that we are one of them. We are one of those party bands that they like. That always helped to get the message across, and Biff [Byford, vocals] shouting at them occasionally. We've always had good members and good songwriters. The present band is included, and we’ve made some good stuff together, I think."

SAXON released "The Eagle Has Landed 40 (Live)" on August 2 via Militia Guard/Silver Lining Music. The effort celebrates all the classics from the group's early years with the modern classics which have continued to define SAXON as legends.

Although SAXON was formed in 1977, the band's debut album didn't arrive until two years later.

Byford and Quinn are the sole remaining original members in the group's current lineup, which issued its 22nd LP, "Thunderbolt", in February 2018.

Originally from South Yorkshire, England, SAXON has gone on to sell about 23 million albums and has produced such classic songs as "Denim And Leather", "Princess Of The Night", "Wheels Of Steel" and "Power And Glory".

In addition to Byford and Quinn, SAXON's current lineup includes bassist Nibbs Carter, guitarist Doug Scarratt and drummer Nigel Glockler.
