SCORPIONS Frontman Calls Out Fan At M3 ROCK FESTIVAL

June 21, 2010

Eddie Trunk — co-host of the VH1 Classic television program "That Metal Show" who has a long-running radio show, "Friday Night Rocks", on New York's Q104.3 FM — has posted a report on this past Saturday's (June 19) M3 Rock Festival, which was held at the Merriweather Post Pavilion in Columbia, Maryland. An excerpt from the SCORPIONS portion of his report follows below.

"To be honest, this was a slightly off night for [SCORPIONS] who I have always felt were one of the all-time great live bands.

"[SCORPIONS singer] Klaus [Meine] has been having some vocals problems and news of the show in New Jersey the night before was circulating. Also backstage rumors right until showtime if Klaus would ever sing at all.

"After a technical delay at the start, they did hit the stage and Klaus did do the set and I thought by halfway through sounded pretty good, all things considered.

"The set was mostly the hits and a few new tunes. Clearly, with 40 years of music, they cannot please everyone with the setlist, but for a festival they played the hits, for the most part.

"Very strange moment, though, about three songs in when Klaus kind of got into it with a fan in the front row because the fan could not hear the vocals. Klaus explained he was sick and he could either do the show or leave.

"It was a little strange and out of character.

"Klaus had a vocal issue about 25 years ago and I'm sure this is messing with his head a bit, but I gotta say from where I watched the set, he sounded OK. I've heard better but hardly awful and stronger as it went on.

"Even not at 100%, SCORPS are better than most live and they pulled it off fine, probably relieved knowing they are ending at the right time in their career."

Fan-filmed video footage of the above-mentioned exchange between Klaus Meine and a fan in the audience can be viewed below. (Go to the 5:20 mark to hear/see Klaus addressing the crowd.)
