SEPULTURA Frontman Says METALLICA's 'Orion Music + More' Festival Was 'A Really Big Success'

Onslaught Radio conducted an interview with vocalist Derrick Green and bassist Paulo Xisto Pinto Jr. of Brazlian/American thrashers SEPULTURA at this year's edition of the Bloodstock Open Air festival, which was held August 9-12 at Catton Park, Derbyshire in the United Kingdom. SEPULTURA was one of the artists who had the honor of performing at METALLICA's Orion Music + More festival, a two-day event featuring more than 20 bands which took place in late June in Atlantic City, New Jersey. Asked for his impressions of the festival and its prospects for the future, Green said, "It's a very cool idea that [the guys in METALLICA] had, actually. It's pretty much them picking the bands for the festival — literally — hand-picking them, and the bands that they like and they enjoy. Different styles [of acts]; a mix. A lot of things they're into that you could walk around the festival and check out. Lars [Ulrich, METALLICA drummer] had a special area with different movies that he's into; Kirk [Hammett, METALLICA guitarist] had an area with his horror collection of scary things and everything; James [Hetfield, METALLICA guitarist/vocalist] with a lot of cars. It kind of felt like you were in their backyard, kind of walking around. And they were announcing that they picked to play the festival. So I think it was a really big success. Just because people were looking for something. They didn't know what to expect."

He added, "Those guys were completely incredible. We were very lucky that Robert [Trujillo, METALLICA bassist] picked us to come there; it was really awesome of him to do that. And I think it's gonna get even better — this Orion festival. Hopefully they'll do it again and I can only see success coming from it."

SEPULTURA last year parted ways with drummer Jean Dolabella and replaced him with Eloy Casagrande (GLÓRIA, ANDRÉ MATOS),a 21-year-old drum prodigy from São Paulo, Brazil who won the Modern Drummer "Undiscovered Drummer" contest as a teenager in 2006. Regarding what it feels like for the other members of SEPULTURA — who are all in their forties now — to share the stage with such a young musician every night, Paulo said, "[Eloy is] a young kid, but he's been [playing] music since he was seven years old. He's handling it like he's been in the band for 20 years. He came in and we played and he fitted very well. When you see him playing with us on stage, you can feel it. The kid is on fire, all the time."

SEPULTURA is touring in support of its 12th studio album, and Nuclear Blast Records debut, "Kairos", which hit stores in July 2011.
