SERJ TANKIAN's 'Prometheus Bound' Musical Premiering Today

February 25, 2011

SYSTEM OF A DOWN frontman Serj Tankian spoke to Dave Wedge of BostonHerald.com about Serj's latest project — composing the score for American Repertory Theater's interpretation of the ancient Greek tragedy "Prometheus Bound" in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Inspired by the immortal Aeschylus tale, the rock musical — which features a dramatic narrative from Tony and Grammy-winning playwright Steven Sater ("Spring Awakening") — starts a five-week run on Friday, February 25. It tells the story of Prometheus, the mythical figure punished by the gods for giving fire to humans.

"Politically, I'm getting off on this project because it works with everything I've worked with . . . the edginess and the themes of injustice and tyranny and civilization and torture," Tankian told BostonHerlad.com.

"I want to do different things artistically, which is why I've done not just rock," Tankian added. "To me, as an artist, I have to grow. Otherwise you're choked by repetition. You don't ever want to do that. For me, this is an amazing opportunity."
