Slash told a New York City radio program on Friday night (October 29) that GUNS N' ROSES would "have to do things way differently than we did" back in their early Nineties heyday if the original lineup was to ever reunite. Slash explained, "It seems like it would be a lot of fun to do, just go back out there, and it seems like a relatively simple idea and there's a ton of fans out there that would love to see it. It'd be cool. But we'd have to do things way differently than we did in '91, '92, '93 and whatever . . . And I don't think that's changeable. That whole production would have to tighten up and be like a real working band, and I don't think that's salvageable."
Slash added that any reunion would depend on singer Axl Rose's willingness to do it, saying, "I know everybody's around, but there has been no conversation, like, 'Let's get the band back together.' If everybody wanted to do it and it was very clear amongst us, (it) means we would have to clean up some personal stuff, which we haven't even begun that."
Slash told The Pulse of Radio not long ago that Rose became more difficult to communicate and work with during the final years of the original GUNS lineup. "His sort of m.o., as far as the band was concerned, over time got so exaggerated in the rock star sense or whatever and he became such a dictator and this and that and the other, that it was impossible for me to work with him, because I'm not the kind of person that takes orders, you know," he said.
Slash's comments on the radio show were sparked by bassist Duff McKagan's recent appearance with GUNS N' ROSES — his first in 17 years — during a London gig by the band, at which he played on five songs.
Slash said about Duff's appearance, "It was cool . . . he just sort of kept me posted through the day and at one point he said he was going down to the venue with Axl. And I was, like, 'Wow!' 'Cause a lot of years have gone by."
Although Axl seems to have good relations with McKagan and former guitarist Izzy Stradlin, Slash explained why he thinks Axl still does not want to associate with him. "I think there's some deep-seated stuff there," he said. "And it really can only come down to what was going on at the time when I finally said, 'I've gotta go.' And I think there was a certain sense of abandonment there."
Slash has been touring behind his debut solo album and is reuniting with McKagan and the rest of VELVET REVOLVER this fall to write new music and find a new vocalist.
