SMASHING PUMPKINS Frontman Calls American Girls 'Sluts'

August 28, 2007

The Pulse of Radio (formerly Launch Radio Networks) reports: SMASHING PUMPKINS frontman Billy Corgan closed the Sunday night (August 26) portion of the U.K.'s Carling Weekend: Reading festival by branding American women "sluts," according to NME.com. When cameras surveying the crowd during the PUMPKINS' set happened to fall upon a scantily clad woman, Corgan remarked, "There's something about a girl who's willing to take her top off so quickly. American girls are sluts too. See — isn't it great to be alternative — you can say all those things."

Corgan then went back to performing. The PUMPKINS played a number of hits during their 90-minute performance, which concluded the massive three-day festival.

It's unclear whether the singer and guitarist was merely joking. Corgan himself was the victim of a verbal attack by NINE INCH NAILS frontman Trent Reznor on Friday (August 24). Reznor took issue with PUMPKINS founder Billy Corgan not reuniting the band's original lineup, saying, "I think trying to resurrect the name SMASHING PUMPKINS... its all a bit corporate for me."

The new PUMPKINS are promoting "Zeitgeist", the first collection of all-new material under the band's name since 2000. The group begins a North American tour on September 8 in Montreal.
