SMASHING PUMPKINS To Headline U.S. VIRGIN FESTIVAL In Baltimore
March 23, 2007SMASHING PUMPKINS have been announced as one of the headliners of the U.S. Virgin Festival, scheduled for August 4-5 at Pimlico Race Course in Baltimore. Also slated to appear are THE POLICE and the BEASTIE BOYS. More lineup announcements and information about ticket sales are expected over the coming weeks. The festival appearance marks the PUMPKINS' first U.S. gig in more than six years.
The first U.S. Virgin Festival was held September 23, 2006 and featured 20 bands performing for more than 45,000 people across two stages and a giant dance tent. This year, the site will again provide all kinds of entertainment and activity, with high-quality concessions, a diverse array of vendors and non-profit organizations, art installations, performance art and more.
The SMASHING PUMPKINS have added a new and slightly odd wrinkle to the release plans for the band's comeback album, "Zeitgeist", which is due to arrive on July 7. The group has announced that the record will be released at exactly 7:07 a.m., which means the CD will come out at the seventh minute of the seventh hour of the seventh day of the seventh month, in the seventh year of the 21st century. Sounds like someone's trying to attach some sort of significance to that. Other details, such as song titles and the exact composition of the band, have yet to be revealed.
Although the music industry issues nearly all new product on Tuesdays, the PUMPKINS disc will arrive on a Saturday.
"Zeitgeist" is the first PUMPKINS album in — you guessed it — seven years. Founder Billy Corgan dissolved the group after the release of 2000's "MACHINA/The Machines of God".
It's unlikely that original guitarist James Iha and bassist D'Arcy Wretzky will join Corgan and founding drummer Jimmy Chamberlin in the new lineup.
The second North American live date for the PUMPKINS will take place on the closing night of the second annual Virgin Festival, scheduled for September 8-9 in Toronto. Tickets go on sale this Saturday (March 24) at 10 a.m. through Ticketmaster. The band has also confirmed several European festival gigs.
