SOUNDGARDEN Guitarist Talks 'Telephantasm' In New Interview

September 28, 2010

Guitarist Kim Thayil of reunited grunge legends SOUNDGARDEN recently shared his thoughts and memories with RollingStone.com's Greg Prato about the 12 main tracks that appear on "Telephantasm", the band's first collection of music since 1996. This career-spanning retrospective album includes never-before-heard unreleased track "Black Rain", taken from the "Badmotorfinger" recording sessions.

Regarding "Black Rain", Thayil said, "I've been reading some stuff on web forums, and some people refer this to as a 'brand new song,' and some people are disappointed because they think it's an old song. Well, they can rest assured that in many ways, it's a new song. It was uncompleted. I love that song, I think it's got a heavy groove, and it's got a couple of memorable rock guitar riffs in it. I've had a number of people point out that Chris' [Cornell] vocal style and performance is very much from the 'Louder Than Love' sessions. But there is something about the viscerality of the song that will remind you of 'Badmotorfinger'. And then the intro and outro has got this ambient trippiness that you could file neatly with 'Superunknown'."

Fan-filmed video footage of SOUNDGARDEN performing "Black Rain" live for the first time ever last night (Monday, September 27) a special "secret" show at Activision's exclusive launch event for Guitar Hero: Warriors of Rock at the Paramount Studios back-lot in Los Angeles, California can be viewed below.

The band partnered with innovative gaming publisher Activision to release the album on September 28 via A&M/UMe inside one million copies of the new videogame Guitar Hero: Warriors of Rock. This release marks the first time a music album has been simultaneously released and bundled with a video game launch. Additionally, fans get full access to the band's new album as downloadable content for Guitar Hero: Warriors of Rock. The 12-song disc will then be available on October 5 at all music retail outlets and on the band's web site.

A&M/UMe released three expanded versions of "Telephantasm" which include a double-disc with 12 additional tracks, five of which are previously unreleased, and SOUNDGARDEN's first-ever DVD, featuring 20 videos, 13 of which have never been released, a deluxe three-LP vinyl edition and an individually numbered super deluxe collector's edition. The super deluxe collector's edition is available for a limited time and includes two CDs, the limited-edition DVD, three heavy vinyl discs, a collectible poster, lithos, and much more. These three expanded versions are available at all music retail outlets and on the band's web site.
