STEVE VAI Explains How His Definition Of 'Success' Has Changed Through The Years

November 8, 2026

In a new interview with Ned Tepper of Australia's Blunt magazine, legendary guitarist Steve Vai was asked how he would define success at this point of his career. He responded (as transcribed by BLABBERMOUTH.NET): "Well, that's changed through the years. My definition of success has changed. In the beginning, it was more of the conventional idea of what success means for us humans, which is basically comfortable living or wealth, great wealth, recognition, appreciation or even being adored, everybody knowing how great you are. And that, in some cases, many cases, is what's considered success. So I went into it with that conditioning. And yes, that kind of success has its place. But you could become successful doing something that doesn't really fulfill you.'

Steve continued: "The kind of success that I think is of the greatest value is the feeling of satisfaction for your creative offerings, your authentic creative offerings. So when you sit and do something creatively without anything in mind regarding what the audience wants, because you don't know any of this stuff, really — I mean, to a degree, yes, but it's still, when that's your goal, it's a very slippery slope. But the one thing you can do that can't be stopped by anybody and depends on nobody but you is find your note, find that thing, that creative spirit in you that's unique, 'cause it's there. It might be abstract. It might seem abstract to you. You might feel like, 'Yeah, I really love to do this, but nobody's gonna care about that. It's gonna fail. If I did what I really wanted to, I just won't fit in.' This is a very common psychology that's full of shit. Because the real satisfaction, I believe, comes from expressing your unique creative impulses, because you know what that feels like. When you do something, you go, 'Ah, wow.' There's a dignity, there's a quality, and then, of course, the ego comes in and says, 'Now everybody...' Well, the artist will think, 'I wanna share this. I would love other people to hear this.' And then the ego comes in and says, 'Yes, and it has to be better than everybody else, and you have to sell more than everybody else, and you have to be more famous than everybody else.' So there's this thing that we battle in our heads. But ultimately, I feel true success comes when you're in your ultra zone creating. [And] my ultra zone is made up of the same thing as anybody's is: focus, passion and joy."

Vai and Joe Satriani's collaborative album, "The Sea Of Emotion", the first studio LP from SATCHVAI, was released on November 6, 2026 via earMUSIC.

The relationship between the two guitar virtuosos began in 1973, when 13-year-old Vai started taking lessons from 17-year-old Satriani.

Vai went on to play with Frank Zappa, David Lee Roth and WHITESNAKE, in addition to launching his own solo career.

"The Sea Of Emotion" album came together after a "G3" reunion tour created an unexpected opening in their schedules. What began as a suggestion to record a single track quickly expanded when Satriani sent Vai two finished pieces, "The Sea Of Emotion, Part 1" and "Part 2".

Vai is a virtuoso guitarist, composer and producer, considered by many as one of the greatest guitarists of all time. In over 45 years in the industry, Vai has sold over 15 million records, received three Grammy Awards, and recorded with music legends like Frank Zappa, David Lee Roth, WHITESNAKE and many more. Vai has also toured extensively and recorded live projects with "G3" (collaborating with different touring lineups including Joe Satriani, John Petrucci, Eric Johnson, Yngwie Malmsteen and Steve Lukather) and "Generation Axe", a supergroup Vai formed with Zakk Wylde, Yngwie Malmsteen, Nuno Bettencourt and Tosin Abasi. Vai is the author of "Vaideology: Basic Music Theory For Guitar Players" (Hal Leonard),his inaugural music theory book designed to help both beginners and veteran guitar players. In the recent past, he has travelled the globe supporting his most recent studio album "Inviolate", staging performances in 51 counties across the globe. Over the course of his 43 years touring, he continues to visit locations for the first time. His final excursion in 2023 saw Vai perform in Ho Chi Minh City (Vietnam),Kaohsiung (Taiwan),Zallak (Bahrain),Bangalore and Kolkata (India),alongside six new markets in China (Foshan, Xi'an, Chengdu, Chongqing, Nanjing and Hefei).
