STOS Guitarist JAN KARDAS Dies Of Cancer

December 26, 2006

Jan Kardas, guitarist of the legendary Polish heavy/speed metal band STOS, passed away several days ago being diagnosed with cancer earlier in the year. He joined the band in 1988 and appeared on the cult album "Stos" (1990) and the reunion demo "Awakening" in 2001. The last official studio recording of STOS with Jan Kardas was the "Love Machine" cover song, recorded for "A Tribute To W.A.S.P. - Shock Rock Hellions" compilation CD (Codiac Records, 2006).

Commented Bart Gabriel of Dragonight Agency (STOS' manager between 2000 and 2004): "These will be really sad days for both his family and friends, but also for all the Polish metalheads. Our scene lost talented guitarist, but also a simply and funny, nice and really great guy. We will miss you, Janek..."

Formed in the early '80s, STOS was often called the "Polish WARLOCK" because of the presence of a female vocalist in the group's lineup. They shared the stage with such acts as RUNNING WILD, HELLOWEEN and OVERKILL and the band's debut album (after a live split LP with OPEN FIRE, entitled "Metalmania '87") sold more than 30,000 copies in Poland alone.
