SYSTEM OF A DOWN Guitarist Says He Has Penned 15 New Songs

June 13, 2003

SYSTEM OF A DOWN guitarist Daron Malakian has penned more than fifteen new songs for the group's next album, but he has not yet shared them with his bandmates. "What I'm writing is more frantic yet more melodic than our other records," he told Rolling Stone. "There's more of an Eastern touch to these songs — a lot of people used to listen to our albums and say to me, 'There's a real Middle Eastern influence there,' and it wasn't there. Now I'm really going to give it to them."

In addition to those influences, Malakian has been drawing inspiration from a number of other, less obvious musical styles, including black metal and British Invasion. "I really respect the black metal scene a lot," he said. "It's the closest we've seen to punk rock, with that kind of integrity. It's either that or I'm listening to early WHO, like from the first couple records, early KINKS or early BEATLES."

SYSTEM OF A DOWN's follow-up to 2001's "Toxicity" is tentatively due to be recorded in October/November for a mid-2004 release.
