'The Art Of METALLICA' Exhibition Coming To Haight Street Art Center In San Francisco

October 26, 2026

Haight Street Art Center (HSAC) has announced "The Art Of Metallica", a landmark exhibition that tells the story of one of the most iconic bands in rock history through the art that has defined its visual aesthetic for more than 40 years. On view from November 5, 2026 through January 10, 2027, the exhibition brings together the original paintings that would become two of modern music's most legendary album covers, decades of concert poster art, tributes from fans around the world, and treasures from San Francisco's own music history — all in the city where METALLICA found the earliest members of the legions that would propel them to global success.

"As San Francisco has historically intertwined visual art with music, METALLICA's visual identity has also grown into a vital part of how their music is experienced," said Brian Lew, curatorial advisor and co-author of "Murder In The Front Row: Shots From The Bay Area Thrash Metal Epicenter". "'The Art Of Metallica' celebrates this visual legacy: a story of individuality, evolution, rebellion, and artistic vision that continues to grow."

At the heart of the exhibition is a rare opportunity to stand before the original artwork for METALLICA's second and third albums — "Ride The Lightning" and "Master Of Puppets", respectively — imagery that introduced millions of listeners to two of the most influential rock albums ever recorded. Surrounding them is the poster art that has chronicled METALLICA's live legacy: concert posters and original flyers from historic shows to the band's recent tours. The work of generations of artists and printmakers, these limited-edition works translate the band's sonic force into visceral, collectible art, tracing an evolution from punk-rooted DIY grit to fine-art precision.

"The Art Of Metallica" opens up the full world of the band. A section devoted to Pushead — the artist whose imagery has become instantly identifiable with METALLICA's '80s-90s ascent as Stanley Mouse and Alton Kelley's work is with THE GRATEFUL DEAD — sits alongside sketches and displays charting the evolution of the band's logo and other iconic elements of the METALLICA universe. Fan banners carried to shows around the world and original fan art presented to the band over the years celebrate the community that has powered METALLICA from the start, while a retrospective of the band's collaborations with Bay Area sports teams shows how deeply it is woven into the region's identity. Visitors can also explore photographs, ephemera, and vintage merchandise, and test their skills in an interactive area featuring the METALLICA remastered pinball machine.

"San Francisco has always been a place where art and music fuel one another, and it feels fitting that this exhibition lands here, steps from Haight Street's own history as the birthplace of rock poster art," said Kelly Harris, executive director of Haight Street Art Center. "METALLICA's story is San Francisco's story — a band embraced early by this city's community of fans, whose visual identity has grown right alongside its music. We're honored to bring that legacy home."

The exhibition is also a San Francisco story. In the 1960s, the Haight-Ashbury became the epicenter of a cultural revolution in which music inspired art, art inspired music, and together they defined a generation. Rock poster art was born here, on the same street HSAC calls home. "The Art Of Metallica" places METALLICA within that lineage through historic artifacts from the city's legendary music history — among them the original marquee sign from The Old Waldorf, the storied San Francisco club where METALLICA played in 1982.

A generation after the Summer of Love, the Bay Area drew METALLICA the way it had drawn so many musicians before. In the early 1980s, the region's fiercely loyal fans of heavy and underground music were among the first to embrace the band's bold, D.I.Y. approach to heavy music. More than four decades later, "The Art Of Metallica" returns that story to the place where it all first took hold.

"The Art Of Metallica" sketches the evolution of the legendary band through the artwork, ephemera, and iconic visual identity of the METALLICA world with highlights hailing back to the early days, including:
