VENOM Frontman: New Album Is 'A Musical El Nino'

October 19, 2004

British black metal pioneers VENOM caused a state of panic and mayhem during the recording of their latest tracks in their Newcastle, U.K. studio, according to a posting on the group's web site. While bassist/vocalist Conrad "Cronos" Lant was recording his bass, a crack appeared along the studio ceiling, covering the engineer, desk and other equipment in dust and debris. Everyone panicked and ran out of the building. Structural engineers were called in and immediately set about rigging the building up with scaffolding to secure the place. "We now know that an internal supporting wall in the building had collapsed [due to the intensity of the bass frequencies] causing one of the supports to fail," said VENOM drummer Antton. Obviously this was a problem ready to happen, but Cronos said he takes full responsibility and makes no apologies for having such a massive sound. "It's my job," he laughed. "It's what I do, and it just shows how insanely heavy the new VENOM album is, it's a musical El Nino." The session will be on hold for a couple of weeks until the building is secured.

In other news, while VENOM's studio is undergoing structural repair, Cronos and Antton took the opportunity to drive up to Glasgow to hang out with SLAYER and SLIPKNOT on the start of the U.K. portion of their "The Unholy Alliance" tour. "SLAYER were on top form," commented Cronos. "They played a fucking great set, and SLIPKNOT have a wild stage show. They put 110% into what they do, plus they are heavy as fuck." A photo of Cronos and Antton with the members of SLIPKNOT can be viewed at this location.
