VINNY APPICE On LAST IN LINE: 'It's The Best Band I've Ever Been In'

February 2, 2015

Totally Driven Radio recently conducted an interview with legendary drummer Vinny Appice (BLACK SABBATH, HEAVEN & HELL, DIO). You can now listen to the chat in the YouTube clip below.

Speaking about his involvement with LAST IN LINE, the band featuring DEF LEPPARD guitarist Vivian Campbell alongside fellow founding DIO members Appice, Jimmy Bain and Claude Schnell, plus singer Andrew Freeman, who has previously fronted HURRICANE and LYNCH MOB, Vinny said: "We're just finishing up an album.

"We got our singer, Andy Freeman, from the [Las] Vegas show '[Raiding The] Rock Vault', and it sounds amazing.

"We did about eight gigs last year, and the people went nuts. 'Cause we're playing most of the old [DIO] stuff. And we did play all the old stuff.

"The next tour we'll probably throw in two new songs or something, 'cause we know people wanna hear the old stuff."

He continued: "The album sounds amazing. That's due out sometime later in the year.

"It's amazing to play these songs and see these people still going crazy for them, and they're thirty-something years old. We're part writers in them. So it's a good feeling."

Asked what it has been like playing with Vivian again, Vinny said: "Viv is like nothing changed. I mean, he's such a great guy. And we just get along great. We have fun. It's the best band I've ever been in as far as… You know, from the beginning it was great, years [ago] when it started. And since then, I've been in a lot of different bands and this is just, like… I look forward to going there and hanging out with everybody. We have a great time. The ideas are flowing, the creativity is there. It's just a nice atmosphere. I love those guys. Viv's been great. I love hanging out with him. [He's] a cool guy."

LAST IN LINE's first CD was recorded with producer Jeff Pilson — an acclaimed bassist who has played with DIO, FOREIGNER, DOKKEN and T&N, among others — for a tentative late 2015 release via Frontiers.

Campbell and Ronnie James Dio worked together on the first three DIO albums — 1983's "Holy Diver", 1984's "The Last in Line" and 1985's "Sacred Heart" — before Irishman Campbell left to join WHITESNAKE in 1987.
