Watch: DEEN CASTRONOVO Plays Full Concert With JOURNEY In San Antonio, Two Days After Suffering Medical Emergency
October 11, 2026JOURNEY drummer Deen Castronovo returned to the stage Saturday night (October 10) to play a full concert with his bandmates at Frost Bank Center in San Antonio, Texas, just two days after he suffered a medical emergency during JOURNEY's concert in Tulsa, Oklahoma.
"He crushed last night," JOURNEY guitarist Neal Schon said in a comment on his Facebook early Sunday morning, in response to a fan query about how Castronovo performed in San Antonio. In a post on X, Schon said "Deen was back in rare form".
According to Setlist.fm, Deen took on lead vocals on three songs during the San Antonio concert — "Lights", "Keep on Runnin'" and "Precious Time" — and shared lead vocals with keyboardist Jonathan Cain on "Just the Same Way" and "Anytime".
Prior to Saturday night's concert, Castronovo took to his Facebook page to write: "Thank you all for the overwhelming love, concern, well wishes, messages and texts over the past couple of days. While I haven't been able to respond to everyone personally, please know how much your kindness and support mean to me.
"Tulsa, I'm so sorry I couldn't finish the show with you all.
"Thank you to Jonathan Cain, Neal Schon and everyone at the BOK Center for lifting me up in prayer that night. Hearing about that touched my heart deeply.
"I'll be joining JOURNEY on stage in San Antonio tonight. Much love to you all!."
On Friday, Schon promised JOURNEY fans that Castronovo would be back for the San Antonio show. "Deen is doing great", the guitarist wrote at the time. "Come out and help welcome him back! Your prayers truly worked."
At the Tulsa show, JOURNEY reportedly stopped the show after just two songs, at which point Cain addressed the crowd after all the other bandmembers left the stage.
"We're gong to see what happens as this progresses," Cain said. "It's an unfortunate situation. We're very sorry. We're hoping it's only a delay, but please — I'm sorry. Don't worry. Have your prayers ready. Have your prayers ready for Deen Castronovo, everybody. Thank you."
Around 10 minutes later, Schon returned to the stage and said that Castronovo had been taken to the hospital. The show then continued, with Castronovo's drum tech, Steve Toomey, sitting behind the kit.
JOURNEY's "Final Frontier" farewell tour launched in Hershey, Pennsylvania on February 28. The current leg of the tour kicked off on September 12 in Los Angeles and will conclude on November 28 in San Francisco.
JOURNEY features Schon (lead guitar),Cain (keyboards, guitar, backing vocals),Arnel Pineda (lead vocals),Castronovo (drums, vocals),Jason Derlatka (keyboards, vocals) and Todd Jensen (bass, vocals).
Castronovo was dismissed from JOURNEY in 2015 following years of alcohol and drug abuse that led to him being sentenced to four years' probation for a variety of charges involving his now-wife. Castronovo later admitted that he emotionally, verbally and physically abused his now-wife and said that he will always be indebted to her for calling the police after his 24-day methamphetamine binge.
Castronovo returned to JOURNEY in July 2021 and has been performing with the band ever since, initially sharing the drum duties in the group with Narada Michael Walden.
In March 2021, Castronovo revealed that he was on opiates for over a year while waiting to get his back surgery during the COVID-19 pandemic.
