10 YEARS Bassist: 'We Found Success Through Word Of Mouth'

April 8, 2006

10 YEARS bassist Lewis Cosby recently told The Flint Journal that the band's success and notoriety thus far has been a slow climb — and they wouldn't have it any other way.

"For us, it's been the ideal way we wanted it to happen," he said. "Our first introduction was playing in people's hometowns. We weren't plastered all over MTV. That's overnight success, and we wouldn't feel like we had earned it.

"We found success through big-time word of mouth. It's been people digging us more and more and their friends going out to see what we're all about. ... We're happy with the way it's gone," he added.

Cosby explained that if there was one message that fans pick up from 10 YEARS — and its major label debut, "The Autumn Effect" — it is that rock still exists.

"There's still truth and substance in rock 'n' roll. We did an interview on MTV recently, and so many bands are more concerned about how they're being sold than what they're selling," said Cosby.

"Pop-punk has taken over. When I was in the sixth grade, bands like NIRVANA, PEARL JAM and ALICE IN CHAINS had something to say. (Kids') only outlet is MTV and that's all reality shows and pop-punk shows where the bands are just concerned with image and doing a big, fancy video.

"I just don't get it. I don't get it."
