It is time again for one of those "Holy Shit!" albums. With "Behold the Failure", Switzerland's MUMAKIL may have just established themselves as heirs to NASUM's grindcore throne. What is sure to end up one of 2009's worthiest grind albums, "Behold the Failure" is the kind of disc that is in league with some of the best releases from the likes of PHOBIA, ROTTEN SOUND, and the aforementioned NASUM, among others.

It is without pretense or experimentation, yet amidst the sheer blast beaten terror are 27 tracks that come with a surprising amount of riff and rhythmic variety within the short time spans (35 minutes total on this one). The approach is akin to carpet bombing runs with all the serenity-decimating aspects one would expect (this one never, ever lets up),yet after the smoke clears and you're ready to sit down again and really listen, all those ferocious, speed-kill riffs turn out to be far beyond one dimensional. The opening track, "Brothers in Slavery", is unrepentant grindcore, yet the initial impact almost approaches a combination of the most savage material from MISERY INDEX and ORIGIN on the edges (something about those steroid pumped militaristic beats and the vocals). From there on, the riff creativity and cool little cadences reveal themselves on songs like "Useless Fucks" and "Wish you the Worst". The band has somehow managed to insert what could even be termed breathing room (in the most relative sense) in "I-Bomb" and brings swagger and groove on "The Order is Fucked Up", while something approaching swing surfaces on "Barbecue in Bophal". The twists and turns within the shrapnel dance continue on "Whip Reward" and "Black Sheep" (check out that minor pace shift on the latter),as well as on "Mass Murder Institution" and "Doomed". If you haven't already figured it out, the boys ain't exactly whistling the right-wing blather from Bill O'Reilly's songbook either.

It is potent, it is powerful, and it is pissed the fuck off! "Behold the Failure" is what a balls-out grindcore album is all about. Not for the feeble.
