With so many bands proclaiming a marked bent toward '70s hard rock that more often than not ends up a butchered amalgam of styles, one most take care to not get suckered into such a lifeless musical experience. With LECHEROUS GAZE's self-titled EP, the deal is more real than you can possibly imagine. The rock is hard, high, and mighty; the tunes have teeth; and the jams are kicked the fuck out!

It makes sense that the LECHEROUS GAZE Rock Collective were "born of a downtown Oakland flophouse once noted for housing members of HIGH ON FIRE, SAVIOURS, and DRUNK HORSE" since anything dishonest or disingenuous just couldn't exist in that setting. The gonzo vibe hits you square in the chops on the up-tempo firebomb that is opener "Phaze", a track rife with '70s fuzz tone guitar and wailing solos reminiscent of vintage TED NUGENT, as well as THE AMBOY DUKES, spiced up with some THIN LIZZY twin leads. Vocalist Lakis Panagiotopulos brings a style resembling the phlegm-choked throat of Danny Joe Brown (ex-MOLLY HATCHET) crossed with a hint of Phil Lynott (THIN LIZZY). The riffing gets even better and the tone even fuzzier on "Sold", at one point breaking down to a slower paced smoldering pile of bluesy rock. That same sizzle continues on "Graveyard", as the flames reignite and the soloing melts anything within earshot before the pace picks back up and the wailing begins again in earnest. With no reprieve for the catching of breath, "R'n'R Lust" scorches its way to the end, leaving nothing but burning embers and ringing ears.

A punk aesthetic is present in a general sense, but the name of the game on this outstanding EP is infinitely memorable hard rock that LECHEROUS GAZE delivers with all guns blazing. You better take cover now because when the next release — presumably a full-length – arrives, the pretenders will be sent scurrying back to their holes like light-averse cockroaches. This is LECHEROUS GAZE and they play rock 'n roll. Bow down and give praise.
