I'm going to spare you all the generic quips where I tell you that the new disc from TOTAL FUCKING DESTRUCTION is just that; total fucking destruction. In terms of sonic obliteration, "Peace, Love And Total Fucking Destruction" does rank right up there on the Richter Scale, yet not entirely in the Godzilla vs. Tokyo meaning of the term. More than simply bombarding craniums with über amounts of distortion, these Philly grind-benders cause more damage to the very fabric of music than they do to the earholes of those tuned in. A refreshing change of pace from the straight-forward skin-shredding that grinders are accustomed to, this album offers a more twisted and cerebral point of view on the genre; if indeed you could even categorize this bastard.
If the urge to label this 20-plus-track slice of the apocalypse does keep you up at night, then file under "F" for fucking insane; which is kind of a no-brainer considering the source from which the album comes. The name which has become synonymous with fucking the rules right out the window, Rich Hoak, pummels, blasts, screams and rants his way through his newest opus of anti with an angst and fervor only he can provide. Along with the hyper-active string mauling of guitarist Pingdum and surprisingly (for music this bombastic) audible bass tone thumped out by Joe Sweeny, TOTAL FUCKING DESTRUCTION take a chainsaw to the status quo (of grind and everything else under the sun) one sense-warping tune at a time. Although this is a disc that comes at you like fiery jet careening wildly through the sky, the true brilliance of "Peace, Love And Total Fucking Destruction" does take a few spins to sink in. The way in which TOTAL FUCKING DESTRUCTION assimilates and then masticates elements of metal, punk, acid groove (the over seven-minute "Last Night I Dreamt We Destroyed The World" is a trip unto itself),grind and whatever other assortment of eclectic experimentation you can dig up into brief, yet highly listenable, and even catchy at times, songs is a feat not many can accomplish. This fucker doesn't stand still for a single second. Blink once and you'll be lost.
Furthermore, this is somewhat of a concept album which tells the tale of boy and his gun wandering through the last days of a slowly dying dystopia. Though loosely told in snippets which rarely top the one-minute mark and require a fair amount of intuitiveness and imagination to understand, the plot line is there and fits the violent motif of the record quite well. This is essentially what you would expect from TOTAL FUCKING DESTRUCTION, as long as you expect the unexpected.
