If unintelligible, impossibly low guttural vocals and a style that bludgeons and then suffocates, while melody is left bleeding in the street do not appeal to you, then you are probably not one of those people dedicated to the deepest part of the death metal underground known as the "brutal death" sector. DEVOURMENT doesn't give a shit anyway. The Dallas boys have perfected the art of the slam and seek only to inflict severe damage to a new set of nervous systems and ear drums with "Unleash the Carnivore". They sure as hell know what they're doing too and if you were one of those in attendance at last year's Central Illinois Metal Fest, then you witnessed the radical adoration fans have shown them since the beginning.
"Unleash the Carnivore" picks up where "Butcher the Weak" left off. Were you expecting dance mixes and soaring melodic choruses? Get with the program. The intensity on this sucker is off the friggin' scale and it just plain goddamn heavy. "Heavy" as in a single Ruben Rosas riff could flatten one of those monster trucks you saw on the Speed channel, leaving the remaining contestants tearing ass out of the stadium with tears streaming down their rosy fat cheeks. It is Eric Park's drumming that is the X factor here though. The guy does far more than blast; he fills every nook and cranny of sound space with a dizzyingly percussive display that is decimating beyond belief. DEVOURMENT also changes up the arrangements better than most bands of this ilk and pulls off some spine-snapping tempo shifts and murderous riff changeups. Of course, Mike Majewski's vocals sound like he just ate a bowl of bad chili, just as it should be. Besides, you'll want to read the lyrics to songs like "Incitement to Mass Murder" and "Deflesh the Abducted" to get your twisted fix.
With a band like DEVOURMENT, you either love it or hate it. Those counting themselves as lovers will find that DEVOURMENT rests comfortably in the upper tier of this thing we call brutal death metal. Few do it better.
Lead, follow, or get the hell out of the way. Those are your only choices.
