ANTHRAX Guitarist Says DIMEBAG's Death Was 'Definitely' Contributing Factor Towards Reunion

September 28, 2005

The Daily Texan recently conducted a short interview with ANTHRAX guitarist Scott Ian. The brief question-and-answer session follows:

Daily Texan: What inspired the reunion of [the classic lineup of] ANTHRAX?

Scott Ian: "It was just the right time. Charlie [Benante] and I had a discussion about it and we just agreed that another window of opportunity like this wouldn't present itself again."

Daily Texan: Dimebag Darrell was featured on two ANTHRAX tracks, "Cadillac Rock Box" and "Strap It On". Was his death a contributing factor towards your reunion?

Scott Ian: "That was definitely a part of it, and I know Charlie had it in mind. You get shaken when something like that happens and I think that just helped our decision to do something like this and to be able to do it with a clear conscience and a clear head and to get rid of some of the tension. It really put things into perspective and put an exclamation point on some of the things we were already feeling."

Daily Texan: Which do you think is the one essential collection worth throwing the money down for?

Scott Ian: "If I had to pick one, as far as the best piece, it would be the home DVD of the first reunion show we did in Jersey back in June. But it actually wasn't our idea to have the four separate releases. We wanted to have the remastered CD and the videos that accompany them ('Anthrology: No-Hit Wonders') paired together and the 'Alive 2' CD and DVD released together. But you don't have conversations with record labels, they tell you what's happening, and it happens."

Daily Texan: ANTHRAX kind of set the standard or the ground work for the recent rap-metal explosion with your work with PUBLIC ENEMY. Was there ever a time, when you said to yourself, 'What have we done?'

Scott Ian: "(laughter) We never really stopped and thought that. We certainly had a lot of people asking us about it, but it was not a genre that we ever really got into personally, outside of RAGE AGAINST THE MACHINE. It just wasn't something we paid much attention to."
