Archive News Jul 23, 2001 - update 1
July 23, 2001It looks like LIMP BIZKIT fans will have to wait until the end of 2002, at the earliest, for the follow up to last year's Chocolate Starfish & the Hot Dog Flavored Water. In an interview with Bilboard.com, LIMP BIZKIT frontman Fred Durst revealed that the guitarist Wes Borland and bassist Sam Rivers have been composing new music separately for the upcoming CD, but that no new songs have yet been written.
...
“The new stuff [Wes is] sending me is really heavy. He's definitely thinking about some things that are bothering him because it's a vulgar display of power. I was like, 'Whoa, Wes, this is the heaviest stuff you've ever done.' He's like, 'Man, I'm taking this act beyond [LIMP BIZKIT's debut album] Three Dollar Bill [Y'All].''
...
'Sam's been sending me a lot of his stuff, and his stuff is really beautiful, I guess,' Durst continued. 'It's very PINK FLOYD-y. So I'm hearing this vulgar power here, and Sam is on this whole PINK FLOYD, melodic bass-line tip, and vocally I won't know 'till I get in there. Vocals come last.'
...
According to the same article, Durst is hoping to begin work on his film directorial debut Wanna-Be this fall, the shooting schedule for which is making it unlikely that LIMP BIZKIT will get back in the studio until early next year. More information as it becomes available.
Former EXODUS/LEGACY (pre-TESTAMENT) vocalist Steve Souza has been asked by TESTAMENT vocalist Chuck Billy to contribute lead vocals to two tracks on the forthcoming TESTAMENT collection of re-workings of early original compositions, entitled First Strike Is Deadly, the recording for which is scheduled to begin today, Monday July 23rd, in San Francisco with producer/engineer Doug Hall. Souza will reportedly appear on the cuts “Reign Of Terror” and “Alone In The Dark”, both of which were originally included on the LEGACY demo that Steve sang on prior to leaving the group to join EXODUS. According to the Thrash Of The Titans event organizer and Chuck Billy's roommate Walter Morgan, current ROB ZOMBIE and former EXODUS/TESTAMENT drummer John Tempesta arrived in San Francisco yesterday, Sunday, July 22nd, and will be tracking his drums all week for the upcoming release, which is tentatively due in October. In related news, the aforementioned Doug Hall, who has spent the last 20 years as the sound engineer for IRON MAIDEN, has been tapped to run sound for the Thrash Of The Titans benefit concert for Billy (who was recently diagnosed with cancer),which is scheduled to take place on Saturday, August 11th at the Maritime Hall in San Francisco.
Veja, the most important weekly magazine in Brazil (the Brazilian equivalent of Time, Newsweek or Focus) has reportedly published a two-page article on the split between SEPULTURA and Roadrunner Records that is negatively slanted towards the band, claiming, among other things, that “SEPULTURA was fired. Their ex-label is now investing in nu-metal.” Here is a rough translation of some of the rest of the story, as authored by Sergio Martins: “The international career dream is over for SEPULTURA. Last week they were thrown away from their label, Roadrunner Records, even with a CD left to be recorded. The reason was the low sales of their records Against and Nation, the last two albums recorded without the singer and guitar player Max Cavalera. The last album, according to Roadrunner, cost the high value of $500,000 dollars [to produce] and didn't get to sell 500,000 copies in the United States. A weak amount of records for a band that already sold eight million copies worldwide. Curiously, SOULFLY, the band Max formed after he left SEPULTURA, will be kept by the record company. He [Max] decided to get into the nu-metal wave, a style that is exploding among teenagers [in the US]. 'Max thinks forward and knows how to absorb the new stuff. SEPULTURA focused too much on the past,', says Santiago Uman, president of Sum Records, which distributes Roadrunner in Brazil.” The rest of the article reportedly goes on to talk about SEPULTURA's past glories and then delves into the subject of nu-metal (implying that SEPULTURA started the movement with Roots and then got devoured by the bands that came after them). The story reportedly ends with the following statement and quote from Ricardo Franzin, editor of Brazil's long-running Rock Brigade magazine. “In Brazil, there's great resistance against nu-metal. 'I prefer listening to samba to [listening to a nu-metal] band,' says Ricardo Franzin, editor-in-chief of Rock Brigade, a magazine dedicated to die-hard metalheads. In some places, SEPULTURA will still have their status.”

The as-yet-untitled album will reportedly contain 13 tracks. In other news, the band's track “Another Day In The Life” will allegedly appear in this summer's movie American Pie 2—in a scene where the characters are driving in a car, and the song comes on the radio. Although the song did not make it onto the film's soundtrack due to its late addition, the band are still planning on going ahead and shooting a video clip for it, reportedly at their own expense.

The group's last UK show for a couple of months will take place on Saturday, August 11th, when the band is scheduled to headline the Cityjam Festival at Nottingham's Rock City. EARTHTONE 9 are still composing material for their forthcoming studio album, which they hope to have fully written by October.
Following last week's announcement that ex-CRIMSON GLORY guitarist Ben Jackson was leaving SECTOR 9 to concentrate on his solo career, it now appears that ex-CG touring drummer Jesse “Martillo” Rojas and bassist Chris Baylor have also departed from the group. However, vocalist and founding member Wade Black (formerly of CRIMSON GLORY) has vowed to carry on with the band, and has already enlisted a new guitarist, a local Tampa “shredder” by the name of Mark Rinaldi. Black is currently finalizing the rest of the line-up before resuming work on the group's material, which will reportedly be “stronger, heavier and louder than ever.”
Former KISS guitarist Bruce Kulick has recorded a KISS cover for a tribute album completely made by fans.
