Cancer Fears For STATUS QUO Guitarist
December 9, 2005Beth Hardie of icNorthLondonOnline has issued the following report:
STATUS QUO's Rick Parfitt needs urgent surgery on his throat amid fears he has cancer.
The 57-year-old rocker had been struggling with his voice while on tour with the band. During a check-up doctors found a tumour on his right vocal cord, which they think is malignant.
QUO manager Simon Porter told the Daily Mirror: "We will not know for certain until the exploratory operation next week but we fear it is probably malignant.
"At the moment Rick has to stay positive which is what he is determined to do."
During his 40 years with the band, heavy smoker Parfitt became well known for his love of drink and drugs and eight years ago he had to undergo a quadruple heart-by-pass.
At the time he commented: "I have lived my life in a certain fashion and there are people who would say the by-pass operation was bound to happen to me.
"But I can only see one way of living my life. I just won’t live the rest of it as hard as I have for the last 30 years."
The QUO tour has now been cancelled and Rick will have exploratory surgery next week.
Porter continued: "Everyone is devastated and is hoping for the best for Rick and his wife Patty.
"It's come at the worst possible time, just before Christmas, and in the middle of a sell-out tour, which the boys were enjoying every second."
